Armored Barracks - For Soldiers and Cannons...

Fortified Barracks alcatraz_exhibits.jpg (8445 bytes) The barracks were first used to support the wharf and build between 1865-1867.  The building was meant for both cannons and soldiers to guard the dock, but the guns were obselete before the building was completed.  The walls are 10 feet thick, and designed to be bomb-proof.  Apartments were built on top of the fortified barracks.  The armored areas meant for yesterday's cannons are used today to house exhibits, a theater, and a bookstore.
