Francisco B&B Reviews

San Francisco Bed and Breakfasts
A fun alternative to a hotel might be a bed and breakfast. Typically
with much more personal service and advice on what to do, B&B's
offer a way to see San Francisco in a whole new way. Make sure you
ask about parking if you have a car. Also, make sure the neighborhood
is one you want to stay in. I'll give some neighborhood facts here.
Prices are a good relative guide. Let me know your experiences at
these B&B's. All include breakfast with stay, but it may be
served early... Note that you definitely get what you pay for at
these places. More $$$ ----> nicer place / better neighborhood,
etc. All phone numbers are area code 415.

Shannon writes, "I stayed in The Red Victorian B&B
this past May while I was in San Francisco and found it to be absolutely
delightful. The rooms were very clean and well kept, and each had
themes related to SF. Enough of them had their own baths that I
didn't have any trouble getting into the shared baths except when
the friend I was traveling with wanted it first. A lovely breakfast
was provided, it was only a block or so from Golden Gate Park, and
I didn't see rates much lower anywhere in the city. Sami Sunchild
is a charming hostess, and I would wholeheartedly recommend the
Red Vic to anyone travelling to the area. "

Nelson writes in Winter 2001, "Our three night stay at
the Victorian Inn on the Park was fantastic. This beautiful Victorian
home has been nicely restored and is in beautiful condition. Our
room had a fireplace and a balcony, which offered a nice view of
Golden Gate Park. The room was nicely
decorated and very comfortable. The bathroom was equipped with a
modern shower, large enough for two friends. Breakfast consisted
of fresh fruits, pastries, juice, and coffee, which were all very
good. The staff was great. They made excellent recommendations for
dining and nightclubs. With a smile on thier faces they even made
our reservations and called for our taxis. The Victorian Inn on
the Park helped make our stay in San Francisco a memorable experience."

"We spent our honeymoon here and were pretty disappointed overall.
There was a lot of dust, flapping wallpaper, and general mustiness,
for one thing, and the staff wasn't nearly as friendly
as those of other B&Bs we've stayed at. We stayed
in the Belvedere room, which they told me when I booked the room
was great for honeymooners, but other than the private balcony overlooking
the park, there wasn't much else to recommend it. And for
the price we paid, it was an awfully small room (and we're used
to B&Bs). In general, I think there are
probably much better B&Bs to stay in in the San Francisco area."

G.C. writes,
"We went to the Archbishops B&B. It
is a delightful older mansion, across from Alamo Square, that has
great architecture. We stayed in the Gypsy Baron room, which is
really nice. Bathrooms updated, but 2 person tub to soak in. It
has a great fireplace, very nice bed and gave us much needed tranquility.
The continental breakfast had great juice and scones, and was delivered
to our door. Parking could be a problem, but with today's economy
I doubt it will be. They have video library, which worked for us.
The room was very spacious. It is one of the more expensive ones
though.
I would highly recommend it for a quiet get away. It is comparable
or a bit less than some of the nicer hotels. I looked quite a bit
before I chose this place. It is highly recommended, though off
the beaten path. the views of the city and park are nice as are
the painted ladies nearby."

writes, "A quiet, clean, cozy Bed&Breakfast.
Staff is friendly and efficient. Lots of fluffy towels. Right by
downtown tourist area and subway system, numerous shops and eateries.
Slight drawback is you have to walk up one steep block, almost 40
degrees slope - might not be easy for the elderly. Otherwise highly
recommended."
Jessica
writes, "This B&B is absolutely charming!
The building is four stories tall with an exposed antique elevator.
The rooms are furnished with antique & wicker furniture.
Rooms are available with full baths or shared baths. All rooms
are impeccable. The historic photographs that line the walls
add to the old world charm of this quaint little inn. You
will feel quite at home when the innkeepers, John & Renate,
hand you a key to the front door. You are greeted by a golden
retriever named Humphrey. If you're lucky you will
catch a glimpse of the house cat, Captain Nemo. Breakfast
consists of warm toasted croissants, just about the best cup of
coffee in the city, and fresh OJ. Afternoon tea & cookies
are also served. Location, location, location! This
B&B is conveniently located at the bottom of Nob Hill.
The Powell & Mason cable cars are just at the end of the block.
Union Square is a 10-minute walk around the corner. There
is a parking garage directly across the street, which also offers
a rental car service. I look forward to my next visit to The
Golden Gate Hotel. This B&B alone will bring me back to
San Francisco."
Hayes

G.G.
recommends in June 1999, "The Hayes Valley Inn is
very clean, homey and inexpensive. I booked my mother there
and she liked it (they also have a senior discount). Rooms are between
$45 and $55. Check it out..." "...I
wanted to let you know that Hayes Valley has turned around and is
becoming a very popular and i believe safe area with a lot of great
restaurants and shops...." (Summer 2002)

B.G. writes, "We stayed at the Jackson

the accommodations. Parking

The building is beautiful - nice wood floors and some working fireplaces.
Great neighborhood - 4-5 nice reasonably priced restaurants

M. complains
in November 1999, "I recently stayed at the Mansions and
was very dissatisfied. The rooms have peeling paint and are generally
run down, the "breakfast included" consisted of either
eggs/potatoes or frozen waffles, both of which were served to me
cold. The "parking" is $15 per night and consists of two
spaces outdoors hidden in an alley <Editor: Staff
quoted 8 spaces on phone>. There is no longer
a restaurant or magic show. Don't go here unless you
want an uncomfortable stay in an overpriced dump. "

15 recently remodeled rooms celebrate the hippie "beat"

600 Presidio in an elegant, peaceful neighborhood about five miles
from downtown
A dissatisfied S.K. writes in January 1998, "Our room was
tiny and dark, and the shower and toilet had been retrofitted into
the room. The room's TV was tiny, old, and had no cable. The ground
floor rooms suffered from very loud street noise. The proprietors
were completely unsympathetic and unapologetic when the noise problems
were mentioned. They were not helpful in changing us to a quieter
room, and did not appear as welcoming/trusting of younger (30's)
guests. The Monte Cristo had a good selection of fresh fruit at
breakfast, but there was a poor selection of restaurants in the
neighborhood. We were not impressed with
this B&B, and I was furious at how badly we had been treated."

"The White Swan on Bush is a beautiful Bed and Breakfast with
the professional service of a large hotel. I felt very safe there
and the rooms are very large. A Deluxe King room runs about $165,
has a fireplace, a dressing room and tons of space. Also included
is a large breakfast buffet in the dining room and afternoon tea
and wine with snacks. I recommend it highly. I've stayed
at the Stanford Court, the Fairmont and
Campton Place. The White Swan is better quality and value for the
money than any of them. " - reader J.S. writes

Larry loved it , "My fiance and I spent four memorable
vacation days at the Alamo Inn in San Francisco from 30 August
through 2 September 2002. This was my first Bed & Breakfast
experience and I was pleased beyond my most vivid imagination. My
fiance has visited other B & Bs but said this was the best she'd
ever seen. Our very first impression was made special by Doug who
greeted us with a huge smile, a welcome handshake and a tour of both
the Victorian mansion and it's 'sister' the Tudor. We actually
stayed in both mansions while there. Our rooms were to die for and
the fresh fruit (not canned!!) and homemade full breakfasts every
day were spectacular. This B & B was so romantic for me that I
decided to propose to my fiance in the park just across the street
from the front of 'our' mansion. Doug actually saw the whole thing
and was the first to congratulate us. He then commenced to spread
the word to the other guests staying there. My fiance and I have
decided to make Alamo Inn a regular annual vacation spot for us."
L'illete raves , "What a delight to
discover this rambling, three-story Victorian and its adjacent Tudor
"sister." The staff is as professional as any upscale
hotel could hope to offer, and yet they are as friendly and courteous
as your dearest neighbors. The food is excellent, with a full American
breakfast served from 8-10 a.m. every morning, and wine or tea in
the early evening hours. The inn keepers will have a cab at the
door for you in minutes; it's a short block to the bus stop and
a 30-minute bus ride to the Financial District; cafes and restaurants,
corner groceries and a health food store, the Alamo Square Park,
the gorgeous "Victorian Ladies" all around (bring a camera
to record the beauty of these old Victorian houses)... I cannot
praise my visits there enough - let it suffice to say that I am
now a regular weekly visitor to the Alamo Square Inn. "
M.S. writes
with a recommendation on the Alamo, "
Wonderful room, beautifully decorated public areas, very tasty full
breakfast. Free parking, a little difficult to maneuver but workable
and worth it. Very pleasant staff. We stayed in the front 2nd floor
two room suite with a little turret window where we sipped tea and
played gin rummy. Great fun. Lots of books & magazines. Very
reasonably priced for the room, food, parking and service. "
