Beresford Arms Hotel
Hotel
Beresford & Hotel Beresford Arms
Both
are located in busy, centrally located neighborhoods near Union
Square. So the price is lower at an estimated $225/night. Complimentary breakfast,
but no parking except paying other garages. The Beresford buildings
are historic and several guests have written with favorable experiences.

Glenda writes
, "We stayed at the Hotel Beresford (Sutter
St, near Mason St) which I think is a nice little hotel. The rooms
are functional and very clean. The housekeeping was good, plus the
towels for the bathroom were plush ones, not the thin, flimsy towels
that one gets from some hotels. One drawback though is that our
room window opened out into Sutter St which could be quite noisy
early in the morning.
Breakfast was
included in the room rate--don't expect too much--there was coffee,
milk, tea and juice plus the usual assortment of donuts, danish,
etc. The breakfast room is a nice area off their restaurant. I think
the location is alright--close to Powell Street and the cable car
stops. I walked to the
Moscone Convention Center (~20 minutes) before I discovered
that taking the cable car (up to Market St) would have been nice
too. Then again, walking was such a great exercise and one gets
to peek into shops. I would recommend this hotel specially if you
like staying in the downtown area; the hotel is within walking distance
of Chinatown
as well.
The staff was
very accommodating. I checked out at noon and placed my luggage
in their storage room as I did not fly out until 10pm, but I went
back a couple of times to the hotel to have them store my shopping
bags. While waiting for my ride, I relaxed in their little homey
lounge; nothing really fancy but there were sofas plus it is in
a separate room away from the front desk. As with most hotels in
this area, there is no air conditioning but you will hardly need
it. They do provide a box fan in case you need more air! A coffee
maker though, would be a welcome addition to the room. But overall,
I had a pleasant stay and would not mind staying in the same hotel
the next time I visit SF!"

writes , " I was very impressed. When
we got there we were told we were given an upgrade to a junior Jacuzzi
suite on the top floor. The room was beautiful, high ceiling,
huge bathroom, and the view was good for the neighborhood.
The service was very nice. The thing I really fell in love
with was the wine social in the truly beautiful lobby. After
seeing San Francisco we relaxed with a glass of house wine and cheese
in such a friendly atmosphere, we almost didn't want to leave for
our dinner in Chinatown. As to the neighborhood, we walked
to Chinatown and back that night, not a worry (then again, I am
a New Yorker living in L.A.). I highly recommend this hotel."

writes , "We paid a special price of $145
for the "Jacuzzi Suite". Let's say you get what you pay
for. While the room was large, the hotel was old and run down, with
none of the charm of a well-kept older hotel. The room was furnished
with cheap '70s furniture and fixtures, and the bathroom (also large)
had the gold/brass fixtures popular 20 years ago, now loose and
falling out. Things worked, but barely. I was also worried about
the security, since the door handle barely locked. "Breakfast"
was a tray of old pastry and bad coffee in styrofoam cups. We stayed
because AAA gave it 3 diamonds; I wrote them telling them to remove
one."
S. enjoyed the Beresford, "I'm from NYC;
I stayed at the Beresford Arms and loved it. The room was spacious
and had a fully stocked kitchen. The bathroom was huge, much bigger
than the one at my house...I didn't think the neighborhood was bad.
The hotel was conviently located to all the hot tourist areas. If
I ever go back to SF again, I'd stay at the same hotel. "
A Florida
reader writes, "I found the Beresford to be a great, inexpensive,
antique hotel. The hotel was in a bit of a bad neighborhood. But,
it's only a couple of blocks from Union Square and Chinatown.
The hotel has no air conditioning, but SF's temperate climate rarely
requires it. We really enjoyed the Beresford's quaintness and close
proximity to the center of the City. "
T. writes
, "The Beresford Arms is the best of the
three Beresford establishments. The hotel is located 3 blocks from
Union Square. While this part of town is a bit dodgy at night, it
is 1 block from several elegant restaurants
and lies at the base of Nob Hill. For larger guest parties, the
parlour suites are newly remodeled and include jacuzzi bathtubs,
bidets, 3 queen beds, a kitchen, furnished living room, and separate
bedroom for $150/night. " 701 Post Street @ Jones and
