San Francisco Bed and Breakfasts
A fun alternative to a hotel might be a bed and breakfast. Typically
with much more personal service and advice on what to do, B&B's
offer a way to see San Francisco in a whole new way. Make sure you
ask about parking if you have a car. Also, make sure the neighborhood
is one you want to stay in. I'll give some neighborhood facts here.
Prices are a good relative guide. Let me know your experiences at
these B&B's. All include breakfast with stay, but it may be
served early... Note that you definitely get what you pay for at
these places. More $$$ ----> nicer place / better neighborhood,

this past May while I was in San Francisco and found it to be absolutely
delightful. The rooms were very clean and well kept, and each had
themes related to SF. Enough of them had their own baths that I
didn't have any trouble getting into the shared baths except when
the friend I was traveling with wanted it first. A lovely breakfast
was provided, it was only a block or so from Golden Gate Park, and
I didn't see rates much lower anywhere in the city. Sami Sunchild
is a charming hostess, and I would wholeheartedly recommend the
Red Vic to anyone travelling to the area. "

Nelson writes in Winter 2001, "Our three night stay at
the Victorian Inn on the Park was fantastic. This beautiful Victorian
home has been nicely restored and is in beautiful condition. Our
room had a fireplace and a balcony, which offered a nice view of
Golden Gate Park. The room was nicely
decorated and very comfortable. The bathroom was equipped with a
modern shower, large enough for two friends. Breakfast consisted
of fresh fruits, pastries, juice, and coffee, which were all very
good. The staff was great. They made excellent recommendations for
dining and nightclubs. With a smile on thier faces they even made
our reservations and called for our taxis. The Victorian Inn on
the Park helped make our stay in San Francisco a memorable experience."

"We spent our honeymoon here and were pretty disappointed overall.
There was a lot of dust, flapping wallpaper, and general mustiness,
for one thing, and the staff wasn't nearly as friendly
as those of other B&Bs we've stayed at. We stayed
in the Belvedere room, which they told me when I booked the room
was great for honeymooners, but other than the private balcony overlooking
the park, there wasn't much else to recommend it. And for
the price we paid, it was an awfully small room (and we're used
to B&Bs). In general, I think there are
probably much better B&Bs to stay in in the San Francisco area."

Staff is friendly and efficient. Lots of fluffy towels. Right by
downtown tourist area and subway system, numerous shops and eateries.
Slight drawback is you have to walk up one steep block, almost 40
degrees slope - might not be easy for the elderly. Otherwise highly
recommended."

The building is four stories tall with an exposed antique elevator.
The rooms are furnished with antique & wicker furniture.
Rooms are available with full baths or shared baths. All rooms
are impeccable. The historic photographs that line the walls
add to the old world charm of this quaint little inn. You
will feel quite at home when the innkeepers, John & Renate,
hand you a key to the front door. You are greeted by a golden
retriever named Humphrey. If you're lucky you will
catch a glimpse of the house cat, Captain Nemo. Breakfast
consists of warm toasted croissants, just about the best cup of
coffee in the city, and fresh OJ. Afternoon tea & cookies
are also served. Location, location, location! This
B&B is conveniently located at the bottom of Nob Hill.
The Powell & Mason cable cars are just at the end of the block.
Union Square is a 10-minute walk around the corner. There
is a parking garage directly across the street, which also offers
a rental car service. I look forward to my next visit to The
Golden Gate Hotel. This B&B alone will bring me back to
San Francisco."

restaurants and shops...."

Court B&B in the fall of '98. We were very pleased with
the accommodations. Parking
is not fun, is available at a nearby hospital lot (2 blocks).
The building is beautiful - nice wood floors and some working fireplaces.
Great neighborhood - 4-5 nice reasonably priced restaurants
nearby on Fillmore. Great place to stay. "

15 recently remodeled rooms celebrate the hippie "beat"
era. More a pensione style inn than a quaint B&B. Located on
a busy corridor of the Italian North Beach
area. The parking in this neighborhood is literally the worst in
the city. Don't bring a car.

A dissatisfied S.K. writes, "Our room was
tiny and dark, and the shower and toilet had been retrofitted into
the room. The room's TV was tiny, old, and had no cable. The ground
floor rooms suffered from very loud street noise. The proprietors
were completely unsympathetic and unapologetic when the noise problems
were mentioned. They were not helpful in changing us to a quieter
room, and did not appear as welcoming/trusting of younger (30's)
guests. The Monte Cristo had a good selection of fresh fruit at
breakfast, but there was a poor selection of restaurants in the
neighborhood. We were not impressed with
this B&B, and I was furious at how badly we had been treated."

"The White Swan on Bush is a beautiful Bed and Breakfast with
the professional service of a large hotel. I felt very safe there
and the rooms are very large. A Deluxe King room runs about $165,
has a fireplace, a dressing room and tons of space. Also included
is a large breakfast buffet in the dining room and afternoon tea
and wine with snacks. I recommend it highly. I've stayed
at the Stanford Court, the Fairmont and
Campton Place. The White Swan is better quality and value for the
